Spirulina is a kind of blue-green algae (cynnobacteria) which is considered a "SUPER FOOD" from ancient periods and it is a popular food and dietery supplement and also used as a whole food. Spirulina is one of the oldest life forms on earth. Spirulina is rich in protein content about 60% of its total mass(more than chicken, beef, pork, soyabean or any form of protein) which makes it a superfood. It also contains large amount of carbohydrate ,fats, iron, calcium, vitamins, minerals, phycocyanin (a complex protein found only in spirulina) and other essential and non-essential amino acids.
Spirulina is manufactured in a open raceway ponds which are shallow and located in a open sun light. Sun light is very very essential for the growth of spirulina. The water should be stirred for every one hour and many paddle wheels are kept to agitate and stir the water. It can thrive in heavy ph conditions and in order to improve the quality of spirulina and to avoid development of bacteria and other micro organisms.
The growing medium water is to be added with feeds like sodium bicarbonate, sodium chloride, phosphoric acid, sea salt, potassium and urea(sometimes). The harvesting can be started after 7-8 days. The water is filtered and separated from the spirulina in a cake form which is then spray dried and reduced to less than 5% moisture level and made as a powder, tablets, capsules and other value added products such as spirulina cookies, spirulina chocolates, spirulina shakes etc...
Spirulina should be manufactured under a controlled environment and in a contrlled culture medium (water). The manufacturing process starts with the selection of high quality Mother spirulina algae. The mass production of spirulina must carried out in a large raceway ponds in which the spirulina grows and multiplies rapidly. The water should be agitated or stirred for every 1 hour. This is very important and done to disperse the nutrients evenly & uniformly throughout the pond and to expose every algae to the direct sunlight for a healthier production. This is done using specially designed paddle wheels fitted to a motor which rotates the wheels steadily, which agitates the water and makes it flow continuously and vigorosly. The paddle wheels are fitted in every corner of the pond.
The growing medium water should be strictly maintained in a optimum pH level which is about 9pH to 9.5pH. and it should be added with appropriate & exact amount of raw materials (nutrients) for a healthy and pure spirulina production. The raw materials are namely, Sodium bicarbonate, Sodium cholride, Potassium, Phosphoric acid and Sea water (if required in a small proportion as it contains lots of nutrients). These raw materials helps the algae to grow very healthy and without any contamination.
The harvesting process starts after 7-8 days. The water medium containing spirulina is allowed to pass through series of filtration mechanisms to eliminate any possible fungal & microbial contamination. After filtering the algae biomass is alone separated in a form of wet cake, which is then carefully spray dried and made as final powder known as spirulina.
